As well as the opportunity to see a wide variety of birds, East Anglia boasts a great selection of orchids as well. We often run into these on our regular birding tours, but we can also go to find particular species on request, if there is any interest.
Some of the species are truly spectacular and the sight of a field full of orchids is something to behold. A few floral highlights from recent weeks are shown below:
Orchids – an amazing drift of orchids in the dunes
Southern Marsh Orchid – one of our commoner species
Early Marsh Orchid – often found in similar places to the Southern
Man Orchid – a rarity in Norfolk
Military Orchid – only found at four sites in the country
Lizard Orchid – the first in Norfolk for 60 years, otherwise seen in Suffolk
Bee Orchid – always a favourite and not uncommon in the right areas
Pyramidal Orchid – with striking pink or pinkish-purple flower spikes
Fen Orchid – not the most spectacular species, but with a very restricted range
