We will make an early start and head up to the Wash to catch the high tide. This is one of the most amazing wildlife spectacles it is possible to see in the UK, when huge numbers of wading birds congregate around the mudflats of the Wash, in north-west Norfolk, at the end of the breeding season, to moult or to spend the winter. Well in excess of 100,000 birds can be present here at times, the largest number being Knot, plus the likes of Bar-tailed Godwit, Oystercatcher, Grey Plover and Dunlin. There is usually a very good variety of other waders present too.
Only on the highest tides each month, the mud is entirely covered with water. At this point, all the birds are pushed off the Wash and fly inland, gathering on the old gravel pits at Snettisham or on the fields beyond. It is a truly amazing sight to see them whirling in huge flocks over the Wash and then flying overhead to roost, thousands at a time. An unforgettable experience!
We will then head over to the RSPB reserve at Titchwell where, after a break for lunch, we will spend a couple of hours looking at the different species of wader there more closely.
We will meet either in Hindolveston at 5.30am or Fakenham at 5.40am, in order to get up to the Wash in time to watch the rising tide. Transport is in our spacious 9-seat minibus and we will visit several different sites during the course of the day. There is a moderate amount of walking, but it is very slow paced and broken into smaller amounts, with lots of stops to look at birds. We normally finish around 3.00-3.30pm.
The price of the tour is £60 per person.
Prices are based on a minimum of four customers booked per tour. If there are fewer people booked, pricing may have to vary by negotiation or the tour may not be able to proceed as planned.
All transport and guiding on the day to and from the agreed meeting point.
You will need to bring a packed lunch. Reserve entrance fees are not included and we will visit RSPB Titchwell, so please make sure you have any RSPB membership cards if you are members (a small charge of £7 per person is payable on entry for non-members).
If you would like to give a gift to someone who is interested in birds then a gift voucher from The Bird ID Company is an ideal present.
The vouchers can be flexible, and used against any tour or tours over the following 12 months, or can be bought for a specific tour.
