The Brecks or Breckland is the name for the area around Thetford, on the borders of Norfolk and Suffolk. Traditionally grass heathland, some of which still persists today, the area with its poor quality soils was extensively planted with trees in the 1920s and 1930s and Thetford Forest still today comprises the largest lowland pine forest in Britain. This combination of specialist habitats contains some highly sought after species.
In early spring, Goshawks display above the forest and Hawfinches are still in their winter flocks, easier to see before the trees get into leaf. Woodlarks sing above the forest clearings, and in some years we may see Crossbills or even an over wintering Great Grey Shrike. We should also see a variety of commoner woodland species such as Treecreeper, Nuthatch and Marsh Tit and finches such as Brambling and Siskin. We are less likely to have time to look for Lesser Spotted Woodpecker on the single day tours, although if they are performing we may have time for a quick look. If you really want to see this species, please contact us to discuss options.
We meet at Lynford Arboretum car park at 8.30am and head off into the Forest. Transport is in our spacious 9-seat minibus and we will visit several different sites during the course of the day. There is a moderate amount of walking, but it is very slow paced and broken into smaller amounts, with lots of stops to look at birds. We normally finish around 4.00-4.30pm.
The price of the tour is £60 per person.
Prices are based on a minimum of four customers booked per tour. If there are fewer people booked, pricing may have to vary by negotiation or the tour may not be able to proceed as planned.
All transport and guiding on the day to and from the agreed meeting point.
You will need to bring a packed lunch. Reserve entrance fees are not included – we are less likely to visit any nature reserves on this tour, but please make sure you bring any membership cards for organisations like RSPB or Norfolk WT if you are members just in case (a small charge of up to £5 per person is payable on entry for non-members).
If you would like to give a gift to someone who is interested in birds then a gift voucher from The Bird ID Company is an ideal present.
The vouchers can be flexible, and used against any tour or tours over the following 12 months, or can be bought for a specific tour.
