A 4-day tour looking for spring migrants and summer visitors mainly on the North Norfolk coast.
Spring Migration
This is a particularly exciting time of year to visit Norfolk for birdwatching. Many species are passing through on migration, on their way to their breeding grounds further north. Our summer birds are returning and activity levels are high, with lots of singing and display, which means that they can be at their most visible. In the spring, many of the birds we see are also at their brightest which enhances the overall spectacle. With such a variety of birds to see, these tours appeal to all interest levels and abilities.
The first migrants start to arrive already in the middle of March, but by early May all our breeding species have returned, meaning diversity is at its peak. This is a good time to see some of our scarcer migrant waders, with Temminck’s Stints and Wood Sandpipers regular now. We have a small but regular spring passage of Dotterel, passing through in their way north from North Africa to Scandinavia. They gather in very traditional fields here before setting off over the North Sea and in early May there is a good chance of catching some here.
In early May, there is a good chance of something rarer too. On recent tours we have seen exciting species like Great Spotted Cuckoo, Black Tern, Wryneck, Great Reed Warbler and Grey-headed Wagtail. You can expect to see around 115-125 species across the four days.
