4th May 2014 – Coast & Heath

Share

Another tour in the Cley area today. With the wind round to the SW, if felt like there should be some migrants around this morning. We had a quick look along the coast early morning, and managed to find Whinchat again and plenty of Wheatears, heard Yellow Wagtail overhead, and had a few Swallows moving west. But it was still quite cool by the sea, so we beat a retreat inland to the heaths. Here we were rewarded with excellent views in particular of both Dartford Warbler and Woodlark.

The afternoon was much warmer, so we headed back down to Cley. A flock of 13 Yellow Wagtails stopped to feed in the grass before heading on west, a White Wagtail lingered on one of the scrapes and several more Wheatears were around the Eye Field. Waders were much in evidence – amongst others, a Common Sandpiper dropped in, Greenshank called overhead, 4 resplendent summer-plumage Bar-tailed Godwits and a gaudy rufous-headed Ruff fed on the pools, and a Little Ringed Plover proved very accommodating.

Back at the car park, a Lapwing performed for the cameras…
