Brecks Tours 2023
The Brecks or Breckland is the name for the area around Thetford, on the borders of Norfolk and Suffolk.
Traditionally poor quality heathland, some of which still persists today, the area was extensively planted with
trees in the 1920s and 1930s and Thetford Forest still today comprises the largest lowland pine forest in
Britain. This combination of specialist habitats contains some highly sought after species.
Our featured birdwatching tours for 2023 which include visits to the Brecks are as follows:
- Winter, Broads & Owls Tour - January 19th-22nd 2023
- Winter, Brecks & Goshawks Tour - March 13th-15th 2023
- Early Spring & Brecks Weekend - April 1st-2nd 2023
Brecks Tours will also operate as single day tours throughout February, March and early April. As usual,
a wide variety of additional dates are available, both for guided group tours and private
customised birding days. Group tours will operate on most weekends, and additional single weekday tours may
also be available, subject to availability and demand.
We also offer the flexibility to pick only a single day, or choose shorter weekend or weekday bird watching
breaks from within the longer tours. Please check the
itinerary
for precise tour destinations and contact us for more details.
Brecks Birds
The primary targets will be Goshawk and Hawfinch. Other birds we will look for
include Woodlark, Crossbill and Firecrest. There may also be an
early Stone Curlew or an over wintering Great Grey Shrike available – we
enjoyed regular sightings of both in previous years. We should also see a variety of commoner woodland species such as
Treecreeper, Nuthatch and Marsh Tit and finches such as
Brambling and Siskin.
On the Winter, Brecks & Goshawks Tour, we will have more time to spend in the Brecks, increasing your chances
of seeing all of the above species and also providing the opportunity to look for other birds including the very
localised Willow Tit and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker.
